The old adage: “What you don’t know can’t hurt you” does not apply to criminal lawyers and their noncitizen clients. Even the most favorable pleas to a criminal charge might seal the fate of the noncitizen. Lawyers commonly assist their clients with making an informed decision about whether to take a plea. This otherwise well-advised advice usually follows a careful evaluation of the strength of their defense and the risks of going to trial. In the case of noncitizens, however, this equation is often entirely different.
