Sex Offender Accused of Groping Teenager on East Bay Bike Path

“EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A convicted sex offender has been arrested on charges he groped a 17-year-old boy on the East Bay Bike Path.

The alleged assault happened at an overlook near Providence.

Capt. Richard Frazier said the 17-year-old Barrington boy had stopped to take a photo. John M. Amaral, 56, of 52 Eight St., told the boy he had seen a coyote and asked him to follow him. As the two walked, Frazier said, Amaral grabbed the youth’s waistband and put his hand down his shorts, touching his genitalia.

The police tracked down Amaral based on his license plate.

Amaral, who was on probation on a previous second-degree child molestation charge on an 8-year-old boy, has been charged with second-degree sexual assault.”
